About the Opportunity:
South Shore Conservatory (SSC), the largest community school for the arts in Massachusetts, seeks a visionary and collaborative Artistic Director to lead and shape its artistic vision across all disciplines. The Artistic Director will be a dynamic, innovative leader who brings a deep commitment to artistic excellence, education, community engagement, and creative collaboration.
This position will serve as a strategic and inspirational voice for the Conservatory’s future, working closely with faculty, students, staff, and the broader community to enhance SSC’s role as a vibrant cultural hub on the South Shore.

Responsibilities  - Essential Functions and Skills
  1. Artistic Vision & Leadership
    1. Define the target audience(s) on the South Shore to determine strategy for “bringing SSC into the community, and the community into SSC.”
    2. Develop and articulate a cohesive and inclusive artistic vision that supports SSC’s mission and values.
    3. Curate and oversee programming across all SSC disciplines (music, dance, creative arts therapy, etc), including concerts, performances, and community events.
    4. Promote innovation in arts education and interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, students, and surrounding communities.
  2. Program Development
    1. Support and expand current artistic offerings in partnership with three direct reports (Director of Early Childhood Education, Director of Arts Education, and Director of Creative Arts Therapies and Community Engagement) and explore new initiatives that respond to community needs and opportunities.
    2. Ensure programmatic excellence, inclusivity, and relevance to SSC’s diverse student body and audiences.
    3. Conduct program evaluations to assess effectiveness (objective and subjective) and ability to meet intended goals (artistic and financial)
    4. Partner with Institutional Advancement and Marketing to ensure appropriate visibility and representation within surrounding communities and target audiences.
  3. Faculty/Staff Leadership, Engagement & Support
    1. Oversee  an organization wide  staff of approximately 20 staff members and over 40 teaching artists to set and achieve ambitious goals, included but not limited to bringing in 3.6M in earned revenue annually.
    2. Inspire and mentor faculty artists, providing  professional development, collaboration, and creative exploration.
    3. Partner with department chairs and direct reports to maintain a high standard of artistic and educational quality.
    4. Implement appropriate faculty performance evaluation program(s).
  4. Community  Partnerships
    1. Serve as a public ambassador and advocate for SSC in the regional arts community.
    2. Cultivate partnerships with schools, cultural institutions, and community organizations to broaden SSC’s reach and impact.
  5. Strategic & Operational Collaboration
    1. Collaborate with SSC leadership on long-range planning, enrollment strategies, and fundraising initiatives.
    2. Contribute to grant applications, donor cultivation, and events as a key artistic representative of the organization.
Education, Experience, and Required Qualifications
  1. Proven record of artistic leadership, preferably within a multidisciplinary or educational arts organization.
  2. Deep knowledge and passion for the performing arts and arts education.
  3. Experience designing and managing programming that is artistically compelling, educationally enriching, and community-responsive.
  4. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire diverse teams and build strong relationships.
  5. A collaborative spirit, open mind, and creative vision aligned with SSC’s mission.
  6. Master’s degree in the arts, arts administration, or related field (or equivalent experience) preferred.
  7. The role requires a great deal of interaction with the public, public and private presentations and the ability to identify and cultivate new and existing relationships.
Important Information
  • The salary range for this position is $120k-140k.
  • This job operates in professional environments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. The job may require going out in the field on the South Shore of Massachusetts for other teaching and/or performance opportunities.
  • This position is mostly sedentary outside of travel. This would require the ability to sit at a desk, frequent walking, bending, or standing as necessary.
