JobSummary: In this role, you bring expert book knowledge of subjects to support the refinement of the backlist assortment held in our bookstores, and to support the management of a healthy inventory across the business. You will be allocated work according to your skill and knowledge across the various responsibilities of the Backlist Team. Notably, these include to methodically rank titles to aid the ICSs in their decision making; to maintain the focus and quality of inventory carried both in stores and the DCs; to create and maintain group codes for use by ICSs and for E-mail marketing segmentation; to support the Frontlist Buying Team in buying new titles from publisher lists allocated to the Team; to identify backlist opportunities attached to frontlist buying; and to support the management of inventory to meet publisher expectations and incentives, in collaboration with the Commercial and Inventory Teams. The Backlist Team is responsible for the initial stocking of books in new stores and for the support of any initiatives intended to improve individual subject or category stocking in stores. An employee in this position can expect a starting rate of $68,000 annually, depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.
WhatYouDo:
- Rank backlist titles within subject areas, or across publisher lists, as directed, and review these periodically.
- Place pre-set orders for backlist titles when appropriate to support the work of ICSs.
- Work methodically to maintain the health of inventory, ensuring titles are moved to X rank when appropriate.
- Support the Inventory Team to maintain the health of inventory by ensuring returns from both stores and the DCs are timely, and DC stock levels are appropriate.
- Place orders with publishers and determine pre-set allocations to stores for new publishing that behaves like backlist.
- Consider backlist opportunities attached to frontlist publishing, working with the Frontlist and Campaign teams.
- Build and maintain subject group codes for use by ICSs and e-com marketing segmentation.
- Build and place the initial orders for new stores to deadlines established by the store opening process.
- Support any initiatives to meet publisher expectation or incentives.
- Work closely and collaboratively with the Store and ICS field teams to support initiatives and refine backlist ranking.
- Use subject expertise to support understanding and development of instruction or training materials concerning the subject.
- Supports title reviews on bn.com and email content when appropriate.
Knowledge&Experience:
- Has deep book knowledge along with three to five years of experience as a book buyer.
- Has deep knowledge and experience of store bookselling to understand section and category curation within stores of different sizes and markets
- Understands the practical ramifications for ICSs and store teams of backlist initiatives.
- Possesses demonstrable expertise and knowledge within subjects required by the Backlist Team.
- Has strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales data and make data-driven buying decisions accompanied by discipline and a strong work ethic.
- Can address backlist decisions across different subjects and categories.
- Has a strong understanding of the life cycle of titles to maintain healthy bookstore and wider company inventory.
- Has a strong intellectual understanding of what creates excellent range and its curation within a bookstore.
- Has good judgement as to why a particular book sells well, why another does not and when one title sells another.
- Proven ability to work with consistent urgency and focus, being consistently productive.
- Works collaboratively with Home Office and Store partners, confident in explaining positions taken and responding positively to feedback.
