The Foundation was created in 2011 to honor Paul M. Angell and strives to embody the legacy of his compassion, ingenuity, and industriousness. ABOUT THE POSITION
The Summer Intern - Talent & Culture (Human Resources) position is a great opportunity for a college student interested in learning more about philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. During this ten-week, part-time internship, the Summer Intern will work alongside a growing, energetic team of professionals and learn about the various aspects of the Foundation’s grantmaking and operations. PMAFF staff will work with the Summer Intern to determine specific projects based on the Foundation’s needs and the interests and educational/career goals of the intern.

The Summer Intern - Talent & Culture will spend some time working in the Foundation’s office and may accompany staff to meetings and site visits in downtown Chicago and in various neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Day-to-day work location will depend upon scheduled activities. The Foundation will assist the Summer Intern with making transportation arrangements, as needed. Additionally, the Summer Intern will attend professional development opportunities, meetings and networking events over the summer.

This position will concurrently complete the 2025 LEAD Summer Internship Program, a series of personal and professional development workshops led by the CAFÉ Group. The Summer Intern - Talent & Culture will attend these workshops and other cohort community building activities during normal working hours.

The Foundation’s hours are 9:00 – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Summer Intern - Talent & Culture will be part-time and work a maximum of 30 hours a week. PMAFF staff will work with the intern to determine the best work schedule. We anticipate 3-4 days per week and start/end times determined at a later date. 

This is a hybrid (in-person and remote) position based in Chicago, IL.

This internship offers an opportunity to work closely with our Talent & Culture team, supporting various research and analysis initiatives aimed at understanding philanthropic employee-related programs and policies. This hands-on experience will provide the intern with valuable insights into HR practices, employee relations, and data analysis, while contributing to projects that directly impact the Foundation.   • Learn about market research techniques to build skills in gathering and analyzing data in an HR context
  • Conduct in-depth market research to support the HR team in evaluating and enhancing employee-related programs.
  • Develop a strong interest in HR and gain exposure to all facets of the field.
  • Research employee benefits in relation to philanthropic industry standards.
  • Investigate time-off policies, including paid time off (PTO), sick leave, vacation, sabbaticals, and holidays.
  • Explore retention strategies to improve employee engagement and retention.
  • Analyze the data gathered and present findings to the HR team.
  • Interview staff to gain insights into benefits satisfaction and needs.
  • Create data visualizations to present research findings in an easily digestible format.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • A rising sophomore (or above) currently enrolled in an academic or training program at an accredited two-year college or four-year institution
  • Passion to learn about nonprofit work
  • A desire to learn more about human resources, employee relations, and business operations
  • Collaborative mindset while also having an ability to work independently and ask for help as needed.
  • Empathy, humility, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be proficient and able to use standard computer applications (Microsoft Office 365).
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in work.
  • Desire to develop excellent writing, analytical, oral communication and critical thinking skills, including the ability to collect, review, synthesize and present information and findings.
  • Desire to work on creating strong interpersonal skills and cross-cultural competency in order to become adept at interacting with a range of diverse stakeholders in a professional, collaborative and diplomatic way.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work week includes a hybrid model of remote and in-person meetings.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and use hands to operate equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, filing cabinets
