Electrophysiology (EP) Nurse – Job Description

Position Summary:
The Electrophysiology (EP) Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac electrophysiology studies, ablations, device implantations (such as pacemakers and ICDs), and other diagnostic or interventional cardiac procedures. This role requires strong critical thinking, cardiac rhythm interpretation skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced procedural environment alongside physicians and technologists.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare patients for electrophysiology procedures, including education, pre-procedure assessment, and IV access.
• Assist physicians during EP studies, ablations, pacemaker/ICD implants, and cardioversions.
• Monitor and interpret patients’ cardiac rhythms throughout procedures.
• Administer medications and manage sedation under established protocols.
• Maintain a sterile field and ensure proper use of specialized EP lab equipment.
• Provide post-procedure care, including recovery, monitoring for complications, and patient/family education.
• Document all aspects of patient care accurately and promptly.
• Collaborate with the EP lab team, cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver optimal patient outcomes.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to all safety and compliance standards.

Qualifications:

• Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
• Licensure: Current RN license in good standing.
• Certifications: BLS and ACLS required; CCRN or RCES preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of critical care, telemetry, or cath lab experience; prior EP lab experience strongly preferred.
