Position Highlights

The College of Nursing invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Academic Advisor II. As a member of the Office of Student & Academic Affairs (OSAA), this role supports undergraduate and graduate nursing students from their first day of class until they graduate from the College. An Academic Advisor serves as a front-line contact for students with developmental advising to empower students to meet their academic and career goals, maximizing student success and retention.

The Academic Advisor will develop formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures, policies, and academic requirements. They will determine whether degree requirements have been fulfilled, counsel students on options to satisfy degree requirements, refer students to appropriate student success resources and report student data. The Academic Advisor II is able to provide reliable academic advising independently and continues to enhance their advising competence.

Duties & Responsibilities

Advising Responsibilities:

  • Assist students in evaluating academic abilities, setting goals and objectives, meeting requirements of a specific program major, and exploring experiential learning and career opportunities.
  • Assist with assessing individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and help to promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Offer advising to students on academic warning, probation, or with eligibility concerns
  • Monitor students' academic progress, determine satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion.
  • Communicate with students and faculty via email, phone, and in-person to address academic issues, assess student progress, advise on life-work balance, financial matters, mental health, and participate in student-centered events.
  • Assist students and faculty with recommendations on petitions, amendments to student’s advisement report, monitor academic progress, maintain student files and records, and evaluate transfer transcripts for equivalencies.
  • Keeps students informed of program or UA requirements and policies for successful completion.
  • Provide guidance to students seeking to change their major, entering and exiting specific disciplines.
  • Collaborates on communication strategies with newly admitted students for next steps, orientation, and course enrollment requirements.
  • Applies student data to enrollment, retention, progression, student success, and completion outreach.
  • Respond to student inquiries and concerns in a professional, timely manner.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Assist with maintaining undergraduate student advisement reports.
  • Assist with and make adjustments to final degree check.
  • Assist with analyzing, updating, and maintaining database of students.
  • Ensures high quality services considering the fast-paced environment and diverse program needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong, professional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to support and advise students with degree completion.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, service-oriented office environment – including responding to walk-in questions
  • Ability to continually improve processes to enhance the student experience.
  • Ability to effectively use administrative systems, databases and standardized software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Previous experience serving undergraduate students in academic advising or other student-related services at the UA or similar higher education institutions.
  • Experience with UAccess and UA advisor tools.
